Short GetUser / GetScratch Validator README!, v2.0 by Dotoran!
============================================================================
What Is It?
~~~~~~~~~~~
Whenever Ray adds new SHORT GETUSER values, or modifies existing ones,
there's bound to be a problem with one or more of the values. This file was
written to give you a means of checking the validity of the data returned by
any of these values. Whether the value is used with a GETUSER or with the
GETSCRATCH command, this program can check them!
How Do I Install It?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1: Copy the "GetUserChecker" file somewhere in your system. I keep mine right
in the included "GU40Pack/" directory and store the directory in my TEXTS:
area(which is what I chose to call my gfiles section). Place this README
file in the same location, so as not to lose it!
2: Add this line to the end of Menu # 2, Available Everywhere, in the text
file BBSMENU, found in your CNET: path:
GUC, Get User Checker `31 | {#0<path>GetUserChecker}
| | ~~~~~~
| `---> A Control-Q Character.
|
`---------> Who Has Access to USE this file?
NOTE: Replace <path> with the location you chose to store this file, as
described in step # 1 above.
3: Reload your BBSMENU file by pressing the RAMIGA-T key combination WHILE
your Control Panel is highlighted, and you're done!
How Do I Use It?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The "GUC" command takes 1 optional argument. If this argument is supplied,
it should either be a SHORT GetUser value in the range 1 thru 102, or a ?, /,
or H, in which case a usage line will be displayed for the file. If the
argument is NOT specified, you will be asked for the GetUser value once the
program has completed loading.
What this program does is to show you the current contents of the GETUSER
that uses that value, as well as the first TEN GETSCRATCH Buffer values. You
can then use this info to determine if both the GETUSER and GETSCRATCH will
work for this value.
If the GETUSER line does not show correct information, as stated in the
manual or from the "GU40_Shorts" listing, then you'll know there's a problem
with this Short GetUser value, in which case you should try and locate the
complimentary LONG, 7-Digit value, which will hopefully be found somewhere in
the "GU40_Longs" listing...
If the GETSCRATCH lines appear to all be showing the SAME information, as
they will if you use the value "7" for Time Remaining, then you will know that
that value can NOT be used as a GETSCRATCH value. Also, as above, if the
GETSCRATCH lines all contain INCORRECT data, then you'll know the GETSCRATCH
value for that number is wrong, and you should consult the "GU40_Longs"...
I was able to use this program to discover a problem with the "79" value,
which is supposed to return the POST DATE, but doesn't. Enter one of your
Message Bases, then READ a message, so you'll be at the "Pass or Respond"
prompt. Then, type "GUC 79". What SHOULD happen is you should see the same
DATE as that shown in the Post Header, but instead, what you'll see is the
name of the last command entered, which was "guc". I've told Ray about this
value, so hopefully, we'll see a fix for this one soon.
Well, that's all there is to using this file. It's a short one, but as
shown above, DOES have some interesting uses!
